Case study on the efficacy of Neuro-Linguistic Programming in enhancing an adolescent’s academic performance and well-being

Neuro Linguistic Programming provides clarification in a variety of different fields associated with the social and cultural context of learning. It is an effective approach for teachers, students, parents, and educators for providing assistance to achieve goals in personal and academic life, building relationships, effective communication, motivating and encouraging oneself, and many more. It helps us to learn more about how adolescents’ brains process words (linguistically) and how that processing can affect past, present, and future incidents of life. It provides methods for monitoring human behaviour and drawing conclusions from it. This is a case study where I will discuss how NLP provides a comprehensive psychological intervention analysis for an adolescent.

Presenting issues

The client is 17 years old, female. The client’s presented issues were low attention in academic subjects, fear of class presentation, a lower grade in academic results, and family pressure. It affects the client in her daily academic life as well as her personal life.

The effect

The client felt anxious to give any kind of presentation. She felt sick during her class presentation exam. Her mouth went dry, she was so shaky she didn’t feel able to stand up to present. She also felt difficulties in group studies and presentation. She couldn’t recall a time she had ever been able to talk to a group as the presenter.

Assessment through NLP Logical levels of thinking pattern

  • Environment: Struggling in school, struggling with maintaining family relationships
  • Behaviour: Can’t give any kind of presentation in front of group members, students, parents, and teacher.
  • Skills: She is good at story writing and baking.
  • Value/Belief: Her belief is “I am unwanted; that’s why my parents don’t love me.”
  • Identity: Her identity is “I am incapable”
  • Purpose: She wants to become a world-famous fashion designer in the future

Diagnosis for shifting

In this case, the client decided to shift in behaviour, identity and belief level. This diagnosis helped to create the specific outcomes of the session.

Outcome of the session

The outcomes of the session are:

  • Give class presentation confidently
  • Create a strong belief and identity for own self

Intervention

This client underwent six NLP therapy sessions to foster resourceful cognitive processes and reinforce a constructive sense of identity. Intervention happened in four stages. The first sage is listening, calibrating, and building rapport for creating a safe place for the adolescent client to share her situation and issue. Second stage, then reframing belief to make a connection between the logical and responsible parts of the mind. Here the client explored the positive intention of her belief and generated different positive actions for reaching her desired state. Third stage: taking small steps towards a positive action. The fourth stage is anchoring a desire state. In this intervention, six steps of reframing, timeline therapy, and resource anchoring have been used as therapeutic techniques for shifting.

Result

After completing the sessions, the client got in touch to let me know that her class presentation had gone well, and she decided to make some changes in her class presentation so it would be even better next time. Her shift happened in three stages. First in behavior level, she started giving concentration, and as a result, she attended exams and presentations confidently. Second in belief level, by reframing a new belief, I love myself; that’s why I am wanted. This belief helped her to develop relationships with her parents. And last shift happened in identity level; with a new identity, I am capable. This identity helped her to access her resources to enhance herself. This case had two follow-up sessions along with six regular sessions and terminated successfully. The NLP models and techniques were very profound to deal with this case.
